Duffy pleaded guilty to the incident

Shane Duffy has been fined and banned from driving for three years after crashing while ‘under the influence of alcohol’.

Duffy pleaded guilty to the incident which took place on May 6 – a week before his club Norwich City were set to face Leeds United in the Championship play-offs.

The Republic of Ireland defender was also handed a €32,000 fine.

He was arrested following a collision involving two vehicles on Queens Road in a village just outside of Norwich.

When breathalysed at the scene, the 32-year-old was found to be almost three times over the legal limit.

Duffy learned his fate in court on Tuesday

Appearing before Norwich Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday Duffy pleaded guilty to drink driving.

As a result, he was handed a three-year ban – a mandatory minimum disqualification since the former Celtic loanee had already been convicted of drunk driving before, nine years ago.

Duffy featured in Ireland’s most recent international squad but was taken off at halftime in the 2-1 win against Hungary.

His call-up came just weeks after the Derry-born defender’s charges went public but interim boss John O’Shea defended his decision to include him at the time.

He said: “He was unequivocal in terms of his passion to play for Ireland and be involved.

“It’s obviously not good but we have to support people as well, he’s been a big player for Ireland and it’s important to support people too. He will have that support with Ireland.

“That’s part and parcel of life, people make mistakes but they have the chance to redeem themselves as well.”
