Ruud van Nistelrooy could recall Ireland striker for Premier League relegation battle

“He’s definitely one on the list for us.”

Leicester City currently find themselves in 19th place in the Premier League table, with manager Ruud van Nistelrooy under pressure to turn the season around.

One man who could help them is Ireland striker Tom Cannon.

The 22-year-old – who made his international debut against Portugal last June – is currently on loan at Stoke City, and has been in decent form with 11 goals this season for the Championship side, and scored opener on Saturday in their FA Cup win over Sunderland.

Reports have said that Van Nistelrooy and Leicester have until Wednesday to recall the forward, or else he will remain with Stoke until the end of the season.

Should he return to his parent club, he could play a part in Leicester’s quest for survival, or be shipped on again to recoup some of the £7.5 million spent on him when he signed from Everton.

Sheffield United could offer a loan-to-buy deal, while Sunderland are also said to be in the hunt for Cannon’s signature.

In a press conference, Van Nistelrooy said: “He’s definitely one on the list for us. We keep a close eye on him like we do with all the boys who are on loan.

“Tom’s situation is closely assessed. There are decisions to be made on that. It’s still a possibility (he stays at Stoke). But we’re looking in this window at his situation, what would be best for him and for the club.”
