As we have always said about Robbie Keane, ‘Give that man three chances and he’ll put one away’

Robbie Keane confirmed his MVP status in California this evening as he swept home the extra-time winner in the MLS Cup Final against New England Revolution.

The Galaxy and Ireland captain finished coolly after 114 minutes to give his team a 2-1 lead they would not relinquish.

Galaxy’s opener arrived midway through the second-half as Gyasi Zardes kept his composure to lash home from a narrow angle and snap a nine-game scoring drought.

Keane had a chance to double the lead after 70 minutes but fired straight at the Revolution goalkeeper after doing all the hard work.

Keane then got in Landon Donovan’s way as the American bore down on goal, to scupper another chance to seal the tie. New England were unperturbed by the close calls and pressed on. Their efforts were rewarded when Jay Tierney rattled home on 79 minutes.

The game went to extra time and Donovan went close with a 20-yard free but, ultimately, Keane proved the hero for the Los Angeles faithful.
