Rangers fans are getting excited about the return of former fan favourite Pedro Mendes

If only he was still available as a player

Pedro Mendes may have only played 50 games for Rangers, but he made a big impression with the Scottish club.

The Portuguese international, part of Porto’s Champions League winning squad in 2004, won the SPL in his only full season in Glasgow.

So it’s no surprise to see Gers fans excited to see him back in Scotland, albeit in a different role to the one in which they had become used to seeing him.

Mendes is the agent of compatriot Pedro Caixinha, the former Al-Gharafa manager who has agreed to replace Mark Warburton in charge of the Scottish club.

The pair were watching the Scottish Premiership meeting with Celtic from the stands at Parkhead, helping them develop an idea of the scale of the task facing them this season and beyond.

And, while the Old Firm game was at the forefront of most supporters’ minds, many were also excited to welcome back a man who many would have liked to see more of during his playing days.

Stuart Armstrong gave Celtic a half-time lead, so naturally Rangers fans all began calling for the same thing.

It didn’t even matter to them that Mendes – now 38 years of age – retired from football in 2012.
