The times they are a changing.

After 15 years of discussion Liverpool are finally expanding Anfield with a revamped Main Stand.

It will bring the total capacity of one of football’s most famous grounds to nearly 55,000 and work will be completed in time for next season.

Much of the construction has already taken place behind the current stand, but following the final home game of the season last night work has now begun on taking down the current Main Stand with the demolition taking place from the pitch and continuing for the next four months.

That work will come at a cost for one of the most iconic features in Liverpool’s ground – the This is Anfield sign that was, until recently, touched by so many players as they entered the pitch.

It certainly looks very strange to see the tunnel without the sign.

Jurgen Klopp has banned the current squad from touching the sign until the have achieved something worthwhile.

The sign will be back in place in the new tunnel next season, so the players may get a chance to touch it if they can triumph next Wednesday night in the Europa League final against Sevilla in Basle.

Liverpool have asked the Premier League for their first two games next season to take place away from home while construction continues on the new Main Stand.
