Peter Schmeichel picks the best XI he’s played with but finds no room for Eric Cantona

No Keith Gillespie? Scandalous

Peter Schmeichel has revealed the best XI of players he’s played alongside and there’s a massive gap where a Kung Fu kicking Frenchman should be.

But, to be fair to the Dane, he explained that he wanted to avail of the deadly strike partnership of Dwight Yorke and Andy Cole when picking the side for PremierLeague.com.

“This is completely crazy because I’ll always say Cantona was the best player I played with for United, I’m not even going to put him in my team,” Schmeichel said.

“This is purely picked as a team to play, not a team for individuals, because if it was, someone like Cantona would clearly have been in there.”

Arguably the greatest ‘keeper of all time selected ten players with whom he played at Old Trafford but the space between the posts was reserved for Schmeichel’s son Kasper who has never played with his father professionally but has undoubtedly put in many hours of drilling in the back garden.

It looks a fierce side all things considered with the tough centre-half pairing of Jaap Stam and Steve Bruce who are flanked by full-backs Gary Neville and Denis Irwin.

The midfield picks itself with David Beckham, Roy Keane, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs all impossible to leave out.

Up top is where the biggest debate is found as the legendary stopper has gone for efficiency rather than flair by favouring the interplay of Dwight Yorke and Andy Cole over the spectacular Cantona.

“The way they clicked, both of them are saying they never worked on that, it was something that happened,” Schmeichel said of his front two.

“Yorkey and Coley, it was unbelievable for that one season I played with them. It was very close to being magic.”
