Tributes paid to football legend Pelé after he passes away aged 82

Pele died on Thursday night.

Thousands of football stars around the world have paid tribute to footballing legend Pele following the news that he had died on Thursday.

Pele died at the age of 82 following a long battle with cancer and leaves with his legacy intact as one of the greatest footballers of all time.

Best known for winning three World Cups – the first of those at the age of 17 – Pele is also Brazil’s joint-record goalscorer with 77 goals in 92 games.

His mark on football will never be forgotten and thousands from around the footballing world paid tribute to the Brazilian legend.

A tweet from the Premier League said: “We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Pele, an extraordinarily gifted footballer who transcended our sport and inspired millions throughout his remarkable career. Our thoughts and sincere condolences go to Pele’s family and friends.”

Alan Shearer said: “RIP legend. You made the game beautiful. You were an absolute superstar.”

Ian Rush tweeted: “A very sad day for football. An icon and a true great of the game who touched millions around the world with his football and personality will be remembered forever. Rest in peace, Pele. My thoughts are with his family.”

Gary Lineker also said: “Pele has died. The most divine of footballers and joyous of men. He played a game only a few chosen ones have come close to. 3 times he lifted the most coveted gold trophy in that beautiful yellow shirt. He may have left us but he’ll always have footballing immortality. RIP Pele.”
