If you say so.
Each December, The Guardian compile a list of the 100 best players in the world over the previous 12 months.
123 football experts, from 49 countries, decide on who should made the cut, and this year’s panel include former Brazil playmaker Zico, Inter Milan legend Javier Zanetti and former Real Madrid and Barcelona forward Gheorghe Hagi.
It’s fair to say they know what they’re talking about.
However, it may come as a surprise to anyone who has watched Memphis Depay in action for Manchester United to see make the illustrious list.
The Dutch winger has been deemed the 86th best player in the world, ahead of the Riyad Mahrez, Santi Carzola and United teammate Juan Mata.
The GuardianIn the first half of this year, Depay was in brilliant form for PSV. The winger scored 22 goals last season as his side won the Dutch league.
However, an impressive showing against Club Brugge aside, Depay has struggled at United and has generally failed to convince.
There’s still a chance the 21 year old can turn into a player worthy of inclusion in a discussion about the best players in the world.
But, based on the form of the past few months, United fans would possibly argue that time isn’t now for Depay.
If the panel are basing their estimation on the winger’s form in Holland, then former teammate Georginio Wijnaldum will likely feature highly.
The midfielder was named player of the year in the Dutch league last season, and has been comfortably Newcastle’s best player this year.
Do you think Depay is worthy of inclusion on the list?
