One glaring reason why Manchester United are back to winning ways

Makes sense

Patrick McCarry

Manchester United are back in the winners’ enclosure after their first win in nine matches.

Louis van Gaal appears to have survived a festive period of discontent and has his United side back in sight of the top four.

Anthony Martial and Wayne Rooney found the net for United to help their team to a 2-1 win over Swansea at Old Trafford.

In scoring the matchwinner, Rooney became the Premier League’s second highest goalscorer [188 goals in 423 games].

Rooney’s flicked goal was his first in the league since October 17, ending a 77-day drought. Martial is the club’s joint-leading scorer with Rooney. The 20-year-old has eight goals in 24 outings.

United struggled to find the net at Old Trafford, throughout the season. At 10 goals, United’s return in home games was 82nd, and the joint lowest, for all teams in the top four English divisions.

There is one glaring reason why United scored twice at home for only the second time since September 30.

United had two shots on target against Chelsea, midweek, but Martial striking the post and Juan Mata thwacking the crossbar are registered as off target efforts.
