Mourinho ‘wouldn’t think twice’ about leaving Luke Shaw out of England team

It would seem José Mourinho is already fitting in nicely over at TalkSport as he already managed to get in a subtle dig at the recently resurgent Luke Shaw, whose stellar season secured him a spot in England’s Euro 2020 squad.

However, it would seem if the starting line-up against Croatia was up to the ‘Special One’, Shaw wouldn’t be in it, as he favoured Chelsea’s Ben Chilwell as the starting left-back. Nothing personal, I’m Shaw.

As you can see in the clip, Mourinho reckons that Chilwell would be the better fit despite playing more regularly in a back-five – though the transition from a three to a five is pretty seamless, in fairness. Conversely, when asked why not Shaw, he says although there has been a clear “evolution”, he believes that “Chilwell has something more”.

It’s no secret that Shaw struggled under Mourinho, not just in terms of his fitness but in terms of mentality and his relationship. Some players need a rollicking, some need an arm around the shoulder: Shaw is clearly the latter and it’s very rare you’re going to get that from José.

He also left out Marcus Rashford from his starting XI – though picking that forward line-up has been making us all pull our hair out, to be honest – though he did opt for Dean Henderson as Southgate’s number one.

You can see his full selection down below, in which he stated his “love” for Jude Bellingham, though he suggested he may not be the right choice for the first game, at least. He also described Harry Kane and Jack Grealish as “untouchable”. Gotta agree there.
