Michael Owen on Anthony Martial: “He’s not taking my breath away”

High standards

Darragh Murphy

It takes an awful lot to impress Michael Owen, it would seem.

The former striker is underwhelmed with Anthony Martial’s marvellous start to Premier League life, saying that that the Frenchman hasn’t done anything that’s not already been done.

Owen made the claim on BT Sport ahead of Manchester United’s 2-1 victory over Wolfsburg on Wednesday night.

“I am not watching him and he is doing things I haven’t seen before. He’s not taking my breath away. But you can’t pick any holes in his game right now, he has scored four. He has done what he had to do, that was the question mark before he came because he didn’t have a goalscoring record.”

Martial has hit four goals in six games for United since signing from Monaco in the summer, as well as registering an assist, and he’s surpassed the expectations of the vast majority of fans.

It’s safe to say that Owen’s critics did not take kindly to his opinion on Martial.
