Memphis Depay set a very unwanted record yesterday

Still a long way to go for Memphis

Robert Redmond

Memphis Depay will have better games for Manchester United.

The 21 year old failed to build on a starring performance against Club Brugge, when he scored twice, and set up United’s third, and put in a lacklustre display against Newcastle United yesterday.

Despite a promising start to the game, United were unable to find the net and the goalless draw meant they lost their 100% start to the season.

Wayne Rooney came in for criticism, again, but it was Depay who lost the ball 35 times… more than any other player in the Premier League this season.Manchester United v Newcastle United - Premier LeagueThe winger lost the ball the ball on average once every three minutes, and beats Dimitri Payet and Robbie Brady to the unwanted record.

The West Ham midfielder lost the ball 33 times against Leicester City last week, while Norwich and Ireland winger Brady was dispossessed 33 times against Sunderland.

Such inconsistency is to be expected of a young player in his first season in the Premier League, but this statistic just shows Memphis still has a long way to go before becoming worthy heir to United’s past great number sevens.
