Manchester United’s great summer of 2015 clear-out is not over yet

When will it end?

Could the last centre defender out of Old Trafford turn out the lights?

For Louis van Gaal, it is his way or the highway/plane/car/bus/tugboat.

Manchester United have the pitchfork out and they are tossing out every player that does not share the same footballing philosophy as their Dutch coach.

Missing pre-season tours does not help either.

That means United’s defender Marcos Rojo is on the brink of being described as a ‘former United defender’.

The Argentine, who was fined £140,000 for missing a flight to the USA this summer, is in van Gaal’s bad books and scrambling to hang onto his place in the United squad.

‘I have received offers but my idea is to stay here [United] and fight for a position because it is a great club,” Rojo told ESPN Radio.

‘I’ll try to play as much as possible. I talked to Van Gaal when I returned and was upset by everything that had happened but he said he was counting on me.’

‘Van Gaal has a very strong personality,’ Rojo added, ‘he demands much and is always on top of the player.

‘Van Gaal has told me to compete with Daley Blind but I can also play to the side [at left-back], where I played several games last year.’

United offloaded Anders Lindegaard, Adnan Januzaj (loan) and Javier Hernandez yesterday.

Several Arsenal fans, meanwhile, got very excited when pictures filtered through, on Monday, of Arsene Wenger boarding a flight to Paris.

Surely that could mean one of only two things – a bid for PSG’s Edinson Cavani or Zlatan Ibrahimovic?

Wenger could simply be heading home during the international break, or doing some TV commentary, but Gunners fans can dream, right?

The dreams of Tottenham fans – of a move for Brazilian striker Pato – have been dashed by an Instagram post.

The 25-year-old, formerly of AC Milan and now with Corinthians, posted this picture last night. It looks as though he will be staying in his homeland.

Almost finally, Southampton are set to sign Celtic defender Virgil van Dijk for £11.5m after he completed a medical in London last night.

Finally finally, West Ham have signed Alex Song on loan from Barcelona for another season.

Tidy pieces of business.
