Manchester United reportedly looking to bid for Newcastle midfielder

According to reports from The Telegraph, the Italian international is now high on United’s shortlist as they look to reshape their midfield options. SunSport have also reported that Tonali has grown increasingly frustrated at St James’ Park in recent weeks, despite not actively pushing for an exit.

Tonali joined Newcastle United from AC Milan in 2023 for £55 million and remains under contract for more than three years, with an option for a fourth. Newcastle are understood to be keen to retain him, particularly with Champions League qualification still a key ambition.

However, Manchester United’s interest is said to be serious. The club are preparing for life after Casemiro, who has confirmed he will leave Old Trafford on a free transfer this summer. With midfield reinforcements high on the agenda, Tonali has been identified as a potential long term replacement.

SunSport also revealed that United are monitoring Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson and Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton, both of whom are expected to be part of England’s World Cup plans. Still, Tonali’s pedigree and experience at the highest level make him an especially attractive option.

United’s recent form has added to the optimism around Old Trafford. The Red Devils have won four league games in a row and remain hopeful of securing Champions League football by the end of the season.

Tonali’s agent Giuseppe Riso confirmed that discussions about his client’s future will take place in the summer, speaking to Tuttosport.

“Newcastle are having a hard time letting go of Sandro and he wants to lead the club to the Champions League.

“We’ll evaluate and decide what to do in the summer. These transfer discussions will take place later. We’ll see how the season ends and then we’ll decide what to do.

“There’s no preference. It’s still early. What we’re saying today won’t apply tomorrow. Newcastle couldn’t let him go now and there’s no point moving, especially since Sandro is very attached to the club.”

With multiple clubs circling and United planning significant changes, Tonali’s future looks set to be one of the summer’s biggest talking points.
