United poised for new Morgan Schneiderlin as current Morgan Schneiderlin isn’t working out.

The club’s 18th attempt to replace Roy Keane has brought them to the door of Chelsea’s Nemanja Matic.

The 27-year-old was a revelation in his second incarnation at Chelsea and helped them to a dominant league win in May 2015.

Mere months later and he was part of a Chelsea squad that struggled badly and got worse until, in December, Jose Mourinho was shown the door. The Serb was one of Mourinho’s most loyal servants and was said to have been disheartened by the club’s lack of loyalty towards their most successful coach.

Matic found the net in Chelsea’s 3-2 defeat to Sunderland, at the weekend, but you never would have told he had put his side in front. His face screamed ‘I’m done here’ while Diego Costa screamed in his face.

Juventus had seemed the most likely destination for Matic but The Daily Mail report the midfielder is waiting for developments on Mourinho.

The Portuguese was looking primed to take over at Manchester United but his appointment may depend on where they finish in the league. Were United to secure Champions League football, the current thinking is that Louis van Gaal will see out the final year of his contract next season.

The newspaper claims Matic is eager to link up with Mourinho again.

Were he to take over at United, Matic could then be brought in to do the defensive midfield job that Morgan Schneiderlin was bought, yet not trusted, to do last summer. The French international is currently residing on the United bench and has struggled to obtain successive starts under van Gaal.
