Manchester United legend Paddy Crerand is a man that likes to speak his mind.
The 77-year-old, who was part of United’s first European Cup winning side in 1968, proved this point on Saturday evening during a conversation on Radio 5Live.
Crerand was appearing alongside BBC Sport editor Dan Roan following United’s 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final.
After Roan had broken the news that manager Louis van Gaal was to be sacked as the United manager on Monday, Crerand embarked on an extraordinary rant, which can be heard below, dismissing the claims as ‘crap’.
“Where do you get that rubbish from?” Crerand demanded. “I’ve just been down outside the United dressing room and saw Ed Woodward hug Van Gaal,” he added.
As we’re all well aware now, Roan’s information proved not to be ‘crap’, with United confirming Van Gaal’s departure on Monday evening.
MUTV, the club’s in house TV station, pulled Monday night’s Paddy Crerand Show, which features the former United midfielder and host Stewart Gardner, replacing it with a rerun of the FA Cup final.
No explanation was given for the decision to change the schedule and Crerand informed 5Live that he had been instructed not to speak by the club when he was approached for further comment.
There is no indication at this stage as to whether it was a one-off move or whether Crerand’s show is under threat in the longer term.
