Manchester United fine Marcos Rojo after blunder leads to pre-season absence

Ah Marcos

Robert Redmond

Really Marcos? Really?

Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo was due to meet up his teammates on their pre-season tour of the United States on Saturday.

Rojo, who was given extended leave due to participation in the Copa America for Argentina, was however a no-show for United’s 3-1 win over Barcelona.

The reason for Rojo’s absence?

He forgot to renew his passport.

Oh dear.

Rojo is set to be fined two weeks wages, worth a reported £140,000, and wasn’t the only Argentine who failed to report for United duty.

Angel di Maria was also absent, but that appears to be because the winger is on the verge of a move to PSG, rather than the failure to check the expiry date on his passport.

“I have heard he (Di Maria) was not on the plane,” said Van Gaal after Saturday’s friendly at Levi’s Stadium in California.

“I cannot say anything. Marcos Rojo was not on the plane, he had a passport issue but with Di Maria I don’t know why.”
