United have competition.
It’s only right that today, the final day of 2020, we sign off with one final transfer story involving Jadon Sancho and Manchester United.
The highly rated Borussia Dortmund winger seemed destined to move to Old Trafford throughout the summer, only for the relentless stream of articles and tweets promising the transfer was close to completion fizzling out into nothing by the close of the window.
Dortmund stood firm on what United felt to be a ludicrously steep asking fee and United mistakenly assumed the German club weren’t being serious when they set them a deadline to get the deal done. They were.
Hopes of United resurrecting a move for Sancho in the future weren’t completely dead, of course, but the idea of them having a completely free run at the deal in the summer of 2021 seemed unlikely.
And sure enough, it’s now being reported that United will indeed have competition for the England international’s signature this summer should they choose to make another attempt to get him.
The Que Golazo podcast (via Football.London) claim Chelsea – the club Sancho supported as a boy – are keeping an eye on the player’s situation in Germany, and could rival United for any approach them make for him.
Dortmund are not open to the idea of selling Sancho in January, but it now seems unlikely he will remain with the Bundesliga side beyond next summer.
Though he has been linked with a move to Spain in the past, the prospect of him returning to England now seems more likely. A return to Manchester, where he played as part of City’s academy set-up, is still a possibility, but the chance to play for a club in London, where he is from, is also sure to be appealing.
