Luis Figo blocked from taking part in legends game ahead of Champions League final

Barcelona don't forgive easily

Darragh Murphy

All it takes is a pig’s head being thrown at you to take away your legend’s status.

Luis Figo was due to play in a Barcelona & Juventus legends side on Friday for an exhibition game against a World All-Stars selection but he can leave his boots at home after the Catalan club asked UEFA to deny the Portuguese his place in the side.

Figo was a hero for Barcelona between 1995 and 2000 before making the risky decision to jump ship and join Barca’s fierce rivals Real Madrid for the next five years of his career which made him one of the most despised figures in Catalunya.

When he returned to the Camp Nou in the white of Real, he was met with jeers that would have been pleasant compared to the pig’s head that was thrown at him in 2002.

And the fifteen years that have passed since that transfer seems to have nothing to have curbed that hatred as Barcelona have formally requested that he be excluded from the squad that looks like this: Edwin van der Sar, Ciro Ferrara, Ludovic Giuly, Alessandro Del Piero, Giovanni van Bronckhorst, Edmilson, Fabio Cannavaro, David Trezeguet, Mark van Bommel, Gianluca Zambrotta, Deco, Eric Abidal and Christian Vieri.
