Louis van Gaal has guided an injury-ravaged Manchester United to third in the table and a eight points off a Chelsea team that one major bookmakers has already paid-out on winning the title.

The Dutchman was none too impressed with his team’s performance in their 2-1 win over Southampton at St Mary’s last night but stated his pleasure at their ability to cobble together a five-game winning streak.

Van Gaal agreed, to an extent, with comments made by former Manchester United defender Gary Neville about his team being lucky to win their latest outing but drew the line at being compared to a pub team. Neville joked, on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, that United’s clash with Liverpool on Sunday would be akin to ‘Dog and Duck versus The Red Lion’.

Addressing Neville’s comments, van Gaal told The Guardian, ‘He can say everything because he is an ex-legend. But as an ex-legend … or as a legend, you have to know what you are saying. You can interpret that (as you like). It’s not difficult. He has to pay attention to his words.’
