A signing that could change the course of an entire season
Chelsea is said to be among a number of clubs interested in securing Lionel Messi in the summer, writes Steve Hopkins.
The Argentine ace looks to have played his last match for PSG and is said to have hopes of returning to play for Barcelona, but that may not happen.
The club needs to slash their wage bill by £180m to meet strict LaLiga rules – something European clubs are fully aware of.
Messi has been suspended for two weeks without pay after missing Monday’s training session without permission due to a commercial commitment in Saudi Arabia.
Chelsea was linked with Messi a number of times during the Roman Abramovich era and football.london claim they are once again interested in acquiring the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner under new owner, Todd Boehly.
Not the first time Lionel Messi has been linked with Chelsea
Lionel Messi has never tested himself in the Premier League but is believed to have been close to a move to Stamford Bridge in 2014.
Sky Italy’s Gianluca Di Marzio claimed Messi was seriously tempted following a FaceTime call with Jose Mourinho. But that was scuppered after his dad and agent, Jorge Messi, found out.
Chelsea are currently sitting at 12th in the Premier League so Boehly will no doubt want to make a mark this summer. And signing Messi sends pretty strong signal.
In 37 appearances for Paris Saint-Germain this season, Messi has scored 20 goals and contributed 19 assists. He also captained Argentina to a stunning World Cup win.
According to reports, Messi currently makes in the region of £1m a week.
