‘That’s up front and centre defence sorted, now where’s David James’ number?’
Carles Puyol is almost a year out of professional football but reports from Spain suggest the permed defensive talisman is hankering for a comeback.
Puyol called time on his Barcelona career at an emotional press conference, last March, and finished up at the end of the season. He has since enjoyed life away from the training pitches and sold-out stadiums, appearing at charity fundraisers, movie premieres and as a guest of honour at World Cup 2014, alongside Gisele Bundchen, no less.
Spanish media outlet Sport reported, on Monday, that Puyol was eyeing up a move to either Qatar or the MLS. Colorado Rapids are said to be keen to add the Spaniard to their ranks.
Irish striker Kevin Doyle was signed up by the Rapids as their overseas player but there is room in their roster for another proven international. Knee issues dogged the 37-year-old’s final season with Barca but time has healed old wounds.
Rapids have, thus far, refused to comment on the Puyol link but no solid offer has been extended.
Rapids could actually do with getting Doyle over to Denver sooner rather than later. They are the only MLS team not to score in their opening four matches of the season.
