Was it ever really on the cards?

It didn’t take long for Jurgen Klopp to rubbish the rumours and break the hearts of a number of die-hard Liverpool fans who refuse to let go of Steven Gerrard.

Much was made in the past 24 hours of a series of chats between Klopp and the former Reds captain that suggested Gerrard could line out for Liverpool in the MLS off-season.

And when Klopp met the press ahead of Liverpool’s Europa League tie with Rubin Kazan, there was always going to be one topic of discussion.

The German didn’t leave any hope of seeing Gerrard in a Reds shirt again as he explained that any return for the legendary midfielder would be strictly in a training capacity.

“All I can say is that I’ve had contact with Stevie,” Klopp said. “One phone call and a few messages.”

“He is a legend. If he’s in Liverpool and wants to train ahead of next season in LA that’s absolutely no problem. Nothing else.”

That’s that then.
