Jonjo Shelvey set to earn massive Newcastle United salary even if they are relegated

Crazy wages

Jonjo Shelvey’s agent has truly earned his commission here.

The former Liverpool and Swansea midfielder is signed on with Newcastle United until 2021. Signed during a desperate January transfer window, the England international secured an £80,000 a week deal.

That’s a lot of weeks and an awful lot of £80,000 instalments.

Shelvey has let it be known that he will not abandon the Toon if they get relegated. Right now, they are six points adrift of Norwich City and seriously floundering.

While Shelvey’s declaration of unyielding commitment is noble, pencil pushers at United may wish he would look elsewhere during the summer.

According to The Telegraph, Shelvey’s agent worked out a deal with the club that had no clause for a pay reduction if United were relegated.

That will be £80,000 a week in The Championship. That figure would top this year’s Championship top earner record – Scott Parker is reportedly on £75,000 a week at Fulham.

Shelvey is not the only player at Newcastle who does not have a relegation salary clause.

Moussa Sissoko is on £55,000 each week and that figure would remain the same even if he dropped down a level. Andros Townsend’s contract is another without any reduction in wages upon dropping down a level.
