You can’t blame Jesse Lingard’s agent for trying.
Jesse Lingard has played seven times for Manchester United this season. In the last two seasons he has made five Premier League appearances for the club.
In February of this year, while on loan at Derby County, he signed a contract extension with United. His agent worked out a decent deal but he was not in a position of great strength.
In the last week, Lingard has set up Wayne Rooney’s winner against CSKA Moscow and scored his first goal for United against West Brom.
Now, his agent is agitating for an invite to the contract negotiating table.
According to The Star, Louis van Gaal has told the 22-year-old to focus on his performances with the club rather than his contract. The Dutchman is looking for a season of eye-catching contributions before the deal can be revisited next summer.
Van Gaal also tempered calls for Lingard to be called into the England senior squad.
He commented, “We have to wait to see if he is consistent because he is more or less the same age as Memphis Depay. We have to wait but I am very happy with his contribution up until now.”
