Jeff Hendrick and Will Keane, should their proposed deals get over the line, will join a team currently sitting one place outside the Champions League places.
Hull City’s 1-0 loss to Manchester United, last weekend, saw them feature 14 fit senior outfield players in a matchday squad for the first time this season. For their league wins over Leicester and Swansea, they had only 13 fit and able men that were not wearing goalkeepers’ gloves.
Mike Phelan’s decent start to 2016/17 season should see him given a proper run at the managerial role and has opened up the chairman’s purse.
Hull are attempting to repel a £20m Aston Villa bid for their striker, Abel Hernandez, while wrapping up transfers for Irish midfielder Jeff Hendrick and Manchester United striker Will Keane.
Hendrick is on the verge of a move from Derby County and talks with Hull, for a reported £10m transfer, are said to be at an advanced stage. The fee, should Hendrick agree personal terms, would be Derby’s biggest ever sale [Seth Johnson fetched £7m from Leeds in 2002].
Phelan is well aware of Keane’s talents, having been assistant coach at Manchester United when the Stockport native was scoring goals for fun in the underage set-up. The 23-year-old is a former England U21 international and had loan spells at QPR, Wigan, Preston and Sheffield Wednesday.
He was recalled from his Preston loan by Louis van Gaal, last season, and made a league and cup appearance.
Should his transfer be finalised, he will become the 18TH player Manchester United have either loaned out or sold this summer. They have brought in four new players in return.
