‘To concede straight from kick-off is absolutely embarrassing.’

Jamie Carragher described Real Madrid’s third goal as “absolutely disgraceful” as Paris Saint-Germain were knocked out of the Champions League on Wednesday night.

Carragher’s view aligned with the player ratings doled out by French newspaper L’Equipe.

Kylian Mbappe opened the scoring in the first half and the Parisians looked destined for the quarter-finals as they went into half-time at the Bernabeu with a two-goal cushion on aggregate.

However, they suffered a dramatic collapse in the second half after Karim Benzema scored a hat-trick in the final 30 minutes of the match. Real Madrid won 3-1 on the night, 3-2 on aggregate.

L’equipe’s player ratings.

L’Equipe were ruthless in their player ratings. The publication gave Gianluigi Donnarumma a 2/10 rating following his failed clearance for Benzema’s first goal. The French newspaper said that the Italian goalkeeper “weighed his team down.”

Presnel Kimpembe scored poorly with a 3/10 rating, as the France defender struggled to handle Benzema and Luca Modric’s link-up play.

Marquinhos was also heavily criticised with a 2/10 rating. L’Equipe described him as the teams’ “gravedigger.” The Brazilian international’s poor pass from kick-off resulted led to Benzema completing his hat-trick.

PSG manager Mauricio Pochettino was also given a low rating, just 4/10. L’Equipe said that the Argentinian “didn’t try anything” as the tie passed by the Paris outfit.

Jamie Carragher’s take on PSG.

Meanwhile, Carragher did not hold back when reflecting on PSG’s defending in the build-up to Benzema’s third goal.

The former Liverpool defender was in disbelief at the French side’s poor game management. PSG bowed out of the Champions League as a result of a lack of composure.

“This is absolutely embarrassing, 11 seconds. If Real Madrid were playing against an Under-15 team or a kids team, this shouldn’t happen,” Carragher said on CBS Sports coverage on Wednesday night.

“This is absolutely disgraceful, it really is. Players at this level, where they’ve just got to dig in and fight.

“They really have, obviously really difficult position where they’ve just conceded two goals. But to do that straight from kick-off is absolutely embarrassing.”

PSG’s wait to win the Champions League goes on for another year, while Real Madrid have advanced to the last eight of the Champions League.
