Is Daniel Sturridge a better striker than Diego Costa, Wayne Rooney, Harry Kane, Romelu Lukaku, Olivier Giroud and Christian Benteke?
He’s probably somewhere between Lukaku and Costa in all honesty but Jamie Carragher thinks that the injury-prone Liverpool forward is just behind Sergio Aguero in terms of quality strikers on show in the Premier League.
“If Sturridge is at his best, if he can stay fit, like the Sturridge we saw when Liverpool almost won the league, if you look around the top teams, there’s only Aguero you’d have before him,” Carragher said on Monday Night Football.
“That coolness, if Liverpool can get him firing then there’s only really Aguero who’s a better striker than him.”
While Sturridge’s brace at the weekend, as well as his goalscoring ratio, would lead you to believe that Carragher isn’t far off but it’s a bold claim to make for a player who’s injured more often than not.
We’re hoping that the England international is able to stay fit for an extended period of time now that he’s returned from his hip injury and signs from the Reds’ 3-2 victory over Aston Villa show that Sturridge and Ings are going to work well together which is something Carragher believes could have a bearing on Christian Benteke’s selection.
“Sturridge is finishing and deserves the accolades, but a lot of it is coming from Danny Ings. He’s pressing people, running in behind them and making the game quicker.
“If Ings keeps playing like that it’ll be difficult for Benteke to get back into the team when he comes back.”
