And to think they’re still booing him.
James McClean hasn’t forgotten his roots.
He may still be the subject of some jeers in England but the Irish winger is a good guy.
The Derry man has offered a real classy gesture to his old GAA club who have had a tough couple of years.
Seán Dolan’s GAC, based in the city, had its clubhouse burnt down in an arson attack at the end of 2011 and they’ve since had to play without even a home pitch until they returned last season.
And, McClean, a former player with the Creggan outfit, has offered his help by agreeing to sponsor the club’s new kit.
The West Bromwich Albion midfielder might not be the most popular man even amongst some of his own fans right now but he has a big heart.
And his kind gesture to his GAA club will go a long way.
“It makes our task of rebuilding the club a hell of a lot easier when we have the likes of James to support us,” a club spokesperson said on Derry Daily.
“The club would like to thank former Seán Dolan’s player James McClean for offering to sponsor a new team kit for the senior team. Fair play James for not forgetting your roots and thanks very much.”
Fair play, James.
Yes, they’re all getting paid to play football and, sure, you might not agree with some of their beliefs. But it’s nice to know that there are some good guys left out there.
