This is just what the young midfielder needs to boost his Ireland chances.

Jack Byrne will play his football at Blackburn Rovers next season after securing a loan move from Manchester City.

Following a season-long deal with SC Cambuur in The Netherlands, the 20-year-old will be kept closer to home and play Championship football at Ewood Park.

Byrne has commented, ‘Absolutely delighted to join Rovers on loan for the season. Thanks to the manager and the club for the opportunity. Can’t wait to get going now.’

Byrne is another St Kevin’s Boys alumni, like Jeff Hendrick and Robbie Brady. He is Owen Coyle’s fifth signing of the summer and will link up with Shane Duffy and Anthony Stokes next season.

The move was mooted by ourselves, on Monday, and the final paperwork has been agreed.

Byrne enjoyed an extremely positive season in the Dutch Eredivise and scored four goals in 27 games. Cambuur wanted to keep him for another year but City have opted to keep him in England, just up the road.

Byrne was called into Martin O’Neill’s Ireland squad, in March, but did not make their Euro 2016 squad.

A stint of Championship football, alongside Irish internationals, will do his international chances no harm at all.
