There are not enough Jaap Stam’s in the modern game.
The “big Dutch man,” as the song goes, is one of the greatest defenders to ever grace the Premier League.
Manchester United was the club for which Stam made the most appearances in his career but he also spent time pocketing strikers in both Serie A and Eredivisie, playing alongside some of the best players of all time.
On Fantasy Football Club last night, the legendary centre-half named the best XI of his former teammates and he gave the nod to Edwin van der Sar over Peter Schmeichel between the sticks which has long been a tricky decision for United fans.
Still though, the goalkeeper position is rendered pretty irrelevant when you’ve got a back four with Cafu, Stam, Nesta and Maldini.
