It’s hard to argue with Jamie Carragher’s pick for the best signing of the summer

Cast your mind back to the start of the 2014/15 Premier League season when Jose Mourinho was a genius, Leicester were average and Watford hadn’t a prayer of staying up.

In August, who would you have backed to prove himself as the best signing of the summer? Memphis Depay? Roberto Firmino? Petr Cech?

Some have been more successful than others and Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher is left in little doubt about who has proven the best value for money.

In his Daily Mail column, Carragher picks Leicester midfielder N’Golo Kante as the best signing after arriving from Caen for £5.6 million (€7.5 million).

“If Dimitri Payet, who had been inspirational for West Ham following his arrival from Marseille, had remained fit, he may well have won this category. The attacking midfielder was the architect of West Ham’s eye-catching early wins at the Emirates, Anfield and the Etihad Stadium and made his £10million fee look great value.

“Petr Cech, who swapped Chelsea for Arsenal for a similar price, has brought improvement to Arsene Wenger’s side and will continue to make them better. Kante, however, has been just as influential as Mahrez and Jamie Vardy in Leicester’s rise to the top and another feather in the cap of their scouting department.”
