Irish paper summons spirit of Maradona with brilliant image of Wes Hoolahan and Belgian defence

Fantastic stuff

Fair play to the layout and design team at The Irish Daily Star.

Now that Jon Walters will be resting his dogs, Irish fans are pinning their hopes on two men – Shane Long and Wes Hoolahan.

On Friday, the Belgians were talking up Long as if he was a lab-created concoction of Michael Owen, Marco van Basten and Gerd Muller, with a little greyhound blood dashed in for good measure.

However, the key to unlocking the Belgians could we be Hoolahan.

Some call the former Shelbourne man Wessi but others refer to him as The Wessiah. Whatever you you spin in, he is all of our hopes and dreams fit snugly into a 5-foot-6 frame.

Ahead of this afternoon’s Group E clash, The Star mocked up a superb image of Hoolahan as Diego Maradona in that infamous snapshot from the 1982 World Cup. First up, the original:

Diego Maradona 1982

Then Wes, in all his glory.

As a side note, Belgium beat Argentina 1-0 in that game. Let’s hope Marc Wilmots side don’t get a similar result.
