Ireland midfielder Darron Gibson charged with drink driving after alleged hit-and-run

Everton and Republic of Ireland midfielder Darron Gibson is to appear in court, charged with drink driving.

The 27-year-old is alleged to have collided with a cyclist while over the drink-driving limit before driving off and crashing into a pump at a petrol station.

Gibson, who spent the majority of his senior career with Manchester United, was said to be driving his Nissan Skyline GT-R Nismo near his home in Altrincham, Cheshire, when the incident occurred.

The Derry man has been charged with driving without due care and attention, driving with excess alcohol and failing to stop after a road traffic collision.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: “He has been bailed to appear at Trafford Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday September 1.

“This is in relation to an incident on Sunday August 16 where police were called to reports that a car had collided with a cyclist on Park Road, Trafford, and failed to stop before pulling into a petrol station on nearby Dunham Road and colliding with a pump.”

The cyclist is understood to have sustained minor injuries in the crash.
