The Spanish goalkeeper love triangle has taken another twist with Iker Casillas suggesting that David de Gea’s move to Real Madrid is a sure thing.
The news will be heartbreaking, if not altogether surprising, for Manchester United fans who were crossing every crossable part of their body in the hope that their reliable goalkeeper would continue under Louis van Gaal.
If de Gea does make the move to the Bernabeu, it would leave the door open for Victor Valdes, who was Casillas’ international rival for so many years, to prove that he still has it with a starting place for United.
Current Real Madrid number 1 Casillas has claimed that he will not shy away from the competition provided by the arrival of de Gea and the absolute terms with which he speaks of the deal would lead one to believe that it’s not far from completion.
“I’m delighted with the competition,” he told El Larguero. “My contract does not say you have to start.”
“I would like to finish my career here,” Casillas added.
“De Gea is a really nice boy and a goalkeeper for the present and future. He’ll be well received and helped.
“We’ll compete. He can handle the pressure and will be served from his experience at United.”
Now all we need is Pepe Reina to somehow get involved and we’ll pretty much have every Spanish goalkeeper for the last 15 years embroiled in one simple transfer saga.
