Not so long ago, in the days when they used to play attacking football, Manchester United had a reputation for getting plenty of penalties from referees.
As a result, many might assume that United have been awarded more spot-kicks than any other side in Premier League history.
But they’d be wrong.
After James Milner tucked away Liverpool’s winner against Swansea from 12 yards, the Anfield club took the lead when it comes to being given penalties in the Premier League.
135 – Liverpool have now been awarded 135 penalties in Premier League history, more than any other team (103 scored). Specialists.

While many will look at such a stat with a cynical eye, it’s worth remembering that a penalty can’t be given unless you have the ball in your opponent’s area. As much as anything, it’s a testimony to attacking football.
