Graeme Souness appears to be trolling Leicester fans with his Team of the Year

Baffling selections

Gareth Makim

We’re big fans of Graeme Souness’s TV work, but we’re not sure what season he’s been watching if this is his genuine team of the season.

The Liverpool legend has compiled his best XI for the Sunday Times, but Leicester fans expecting their fairytale march towards Premier League to be recognised are in for a big shock.

The Foxes have only managed to get one place in the Scot’s side, with prolific striker Jamie Vardy leading the line alongside Tottenham’s Harry Kane and Everton star Romelu Lukaku.

That’s a frontline few would argue with, but it’s behind that where eyebrows will begin to curl northwards.

Neither Riyad Mahrez nor N’Golo Kante have done enough for Souness, despite his admission that the Algerian schemer is the front-runner for Player of the Year.

“Riyad Mahrez may be favourite for player of the year, but who do you pick him instead of? Payet? Alli? Not for me,” Souness writes, instead favouring a midfield trio of West Ham’s Dimitri Payet and Spurs pair Dele Alli and Eric Dier.

Tottenham also have two representatives in the back four, with the deserving Toby Alderweireld and Danny Rose lining out in front of Manchester United keeper David de Gea, but the selection of Daley Blind and Branislav Ivanovic is a real head scratcher.

Ivanovic might have turned things around a bit since the arrival of Guus Hiddink at Chelsea, but he was one of the chief culprits during the Blues’ torrid first half and Blind isn’t even the best defender on his own team (Hi Chris Smalling).

Surely either Wes Morgan or Robert Huth are more deserving than the Dutchman?
