A goal to cherish from Justin Flynn.

Johnstown FC, from Navan, claimed the Fitzsimons Cup this week in a match hosted by Newtown United’s home patch, just outside of Nobber, Co. Meath.

Flynn’s volley made it 2-0 and his team-mates went on to clinch the cup after beating Athboy Celtic 4-0.

The full match report, on the Johnstown FC website, needs your attention but here are a couple of stunning, opening paragraphs:

American gymnast and Olympic champion Mary Lou Retton once said “A trophy carries dust. Memories last forever” and thanks to Friday night’s comprehensive 4-0 victory over division 2 champions Athboy Celtic in the Fitzsimon Cup final, Johnstown have both.

[Johnstown] named a starting XI that showed just one change from their semi final against Rossin Rovers, following an incredibly magnanimous gesture by Brian Clerkin to stand aside and allow a specialist keeper in Gintas Baltinas take his place between the sticks.
