Wilkommen.
That is the message one German magazine feels should be imparted to Irish fans planning to attend Euro 2016.
Next summer’s European Championships take place in France. The excitement of all 24 countries qualifying for the tournament has been tempered somewhat by last weekend’s terrorist attacks in Paris.
However, 11 Freunde believes that Euro 2016 should be a continued show of support to, and solidarity with, France.
To that end, the magazine is delighted that Ireland have reached the championships. They write:
“If we allow fear to overtake the joy of living, we have lost.
“The world needs joy, dancing, celebrations and singing – who can do that better than the Irish?”
The piece continues, “The qualifications of the Irish is a godsend. The Boys in Green can celebrate like no other nation – always peaceful, always sympathetic and emphatic, with an infectious, childlike joy. And joy is what we need.”
11 Freunde has also celebrated the dressing room celebrations of Irish kitman Dick Redmond and the musical talents of Wes Hoolahan, Robbie Brady & co.
First highlighted by Póg Mo Gol, the piece by Stephan Reich concludes with this fitting statement: “But as Paris is about life, football is also about life. The Irish are the best proof.”
Vielen Dank.
