Gary Lineker’s brilliant take on England losing to Iceland was the most re-tweeted tweet of Euro 2016.
The Three Lions lost 2-1 to the tiny island in the last-16 of the tournament, and set social media alight in the process.
The nation that invented football were defeated by the smallest country to ever qualify for a major championships, and Lineker’s take on the shocking, hilarious and humiliating England defeat pretty much summed up the scale of the result.
The BBC’s football presenter tweeted:
“The worst defeat in our history. England beaten by a country with more volcanoes than professional footballers. Well played Iceland.”

Lineker’s tweet has even gained more re-tweets (so far) than this from Cristiano Ronaldo celebrating Portugal’s victory over France in the final of the tournament.
Not too shabby, considering the Portugal captain has over 44m followers to Lineker’s 4.95m.
