United lost a goal and a man in the closing stages in Oslo

Manchester United midfielder Fred was sent off as Erik ten Hag’s side were defeated 1-0 by Atletico Madrid in Norway.

United were playing the penultimate game of their preseason in Oslo, on Saturday afternoon. Despite producing a host of decent chances to score in the game, they fell behind inside the final ten minutes due to a smartly taken goal by Joao Felix.

Fred sees red for United

As United looked to level the scores, Fred – already on a yellow card – brought Alvaro Morata on halfway.

The Brazilian then followed the challenge by standing on the former Chelsea striker, prompting an angry reaction from him and his Atleti teammates.

Debut for Christian Eriksen

The referee responded by giving Fred a second yellow card, leaving United to finish the game with 10 men. Harry Maguire and Scott McTominay also picked up bookings in the game.

Earlier in the second half United had given a debut to Christian Eriksen after his arrival on a free transfer was confirmed earlier in the week. Lisandro Martinez was named on the bench but did not feature.

Erik ten Hag started Anthony Martial up front, with Anthony Elanga and Marcus Rashford supporting him. Donny van de Beek, Facundo Pellestri and James Garner also got second half run-outs as ten Hag looked to keep United as fresh as possible.

United will now return to Manchester where they will face Rayo Vallecano at Old Trafford on Sunday. They play their opening fixture of the new Premier League campaign at home to Brighton next Sunday.
