The Football Spin: Lampard’s blues, Sterling’s class and the lingering VAR debate

SportsJOE

Lampard’s welcome to hell, United are back, Raheem Sterling can’t be stopped.

After all the transfer rumours, after all the deadline day drama and after all the anticipation, the Premier League is finally up and running as a new season gets underway.

The table doesn’t look that new though. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Last year’s champions Manchester City haven’t wasted time in declaring business and they’ve shot straight up to the driving seat with a ruthless opening day win. West Ham were savaged. Many believe the top of the table won’t have changed by next May.

Time will tell.

Their neighbours might actually have something to say about that this time around though though. With Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford back on song and with World Record signings Maguire and Wan-Bissaka slotting in seemlessly, Olé is indeed back at the wheel and their 4-0 defeat of Chelsea certainly bodes well.

There are tougher tests to come though. That says it all about the job Frank Lampard has on his hands and on the latest episode of The Football Spin, Dion Fanning and Paddy McKenna sum up the scale of it.

Elsewhere, Liverpool mixed the sublime with the less so while Reuben Pinder, football correspondent for JOE.co.uk has an interesting take on the VAR debate of the weekend.
