Fabian Delph’s explanation for staying with Aston Villa will restore your faith in footballers

Fair play to the lad.

There were a lot of rumours saying that Aston Villa midfielder, Fabian Delph, would accept a massive wage from Man City to become a squad player, but he has decided to stay with Tim Sherwood’s side.

In an era where footballers are routinely called greedy, it lifts your spirit to see a top player show some commitment to the club that helped mould him.

“I’m aware there has been intense media speculation surrounding my future in the last 24 hours and I want to set the record straight,” Delph said in a statement on the Villa website.

“I’m not leaving. I’m staying at the football club and I can’t wait for the start of the season and captaining this great football club.”

Footballing wise, it is probably the right move for Delph. He is a classy player but it is unlikely that he would have been a first team regular with Manchester City and he may have ended up like a Scott Sinclair-esque ghost had he joined Manuel Pellegrini’s outfit.
