David Beckham takes cheeky swipe at Man City when asked about the treble

‘Obviously that’s a special thing for any club to do’

David Beckham has claimed that Manchester City will never be able to match Manchester United’s treble win.

Man City are a game away from becoming the first team in England to win the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League in the same season since their local rivals did in 1999.

There has been debate about which would be the better achievement if Pep Guardiola’s side are able to overcome Inter Milan on Saturday.

Beckham was one of those who were a part of United’s historical moment and when asked if Man City’s could compare, or even be classed as better, the former England international remained loyal to his beloved Red Devils.

“We’re all divided in our opinions of that,” he told the Football Association’s media team via Manchester Evening News.

“I said to Noel [Gallagher] the other day even if you guys [City] go on to win the trophy today and the Champions League and they do do the treble, obviously that’s a special thing for any club to do.

“But there’s only one club that can ever win the first time – and we were that club. So in all honesty, as a United fan, if these guys get to win the treble, that feeling as a player of lifting all three trophies and creating history, that was an amazing thing.

“We were all hometown players that had lived and breathed United all the way through and then to win the treble, the way we won it, and also for the first time, can never be done again.”

Despite City’s dominance over the last decade, this will be just their second Champions League final appearance – losing their one and only other to Chelsea – while Inter will be looking to win the trophy for a fourth time in their history.
