David Beckham has merged his love of football with a globe trotting adventure for the new BBC film Beckham: For the love of the game.
The former England captain, who retired from the professional game two years ago, will be seen playing seven games of football across seven different continents – including the first ever game to be played in Antarctica.
Beckham will be participating in games of football in a variety of other unusual locations, with the desert plains of Djibouti, the Himalayan foothills of Nepal and the streets of Argentine capital, Buenos Aires, all featured.
The ex Manchester United man will meet locals from each of the places, before playing either seven-a-side or eleven-a-side games of football with players selected from the different communities.
The final match will see Beckham return to Old Trafford, where he plays the final game alongside a host of football’s most famous names.
“I remember sitting on a plane and discussing this idea with friends and never thinking it would become a reality,” Beckham is quoted in the Mirror. “I’m genuinely excited now we can realise this ambitious idea.”
“Whether as a player or out in the field for UNICEF and other charitable partners, I have seen the transformational effect that sport and in particular football has on people’s lives.
“This epic journey will allow me to show the positive side of the game I love and shine a light on the passion and selflessness of people that play this sport as a force for good.”
The film is due to air on the BBC at some point in 2016.
