We always knew he was shit.
It’s not quite gone Cristiano’s way lately, has it? We say that, it was only three weeks ago that he tucked away a winning penalty in the Champions League Final, but you know what we mean – Euro 2016 hasn’t been his finest hour.
Having spent most of Portugal’s 1-1 draw with Iceland shaking his head, throwing his arms about in disgust and flashing about smiles of disbelief, his comments after the match didn’t paint him in the best of light.
“When they don’t try to play and just defend, defend, defend, this in my opinion shows a small mentality and they are not going to do anything in the competition.”
Instead of congratulating a resilient Iceland side on their first ever point in a major tournament, Ronaldo decided to sulk about it and take a swipe at their “small mentality”.
Heading into their next match against Austria, many expected Ronaldo to put it all behind him and get back to doing what he’s done on many occasions in the last decade or so – carrying his country.
But yet again, things didn’t go to plan for the Real Madrid man. Having spurned a host of opportunities already, he won a penalty with just over ten minutes left to play. It was never in doubt that he’d take the spot-kick, and when he sent the goalkeeper the wrong way, the bulging net seemed inevitable.
But then this happened…
The post denied him and the game finished 0-0. Portugal are still not guaranteed a passage into the last 16.
