Irish youngster reveals what Jurgen Klopp said to him when he made the bench for Liverpool

A great experience for Conor Masterson

An experience he’ll never forget.

Irish youngster Conor Masterson has been reflecting on his first call-up to the senior Liverpool squad.

The 17-year-old Dubliner was an unused substitute during Jurgen Klopp’s side 2-2 draw with Exeter City in the FA Cup third round last Friday.

Masterson, who was given the number 87 shirt by the club, described the experience as “surreal”, but an “unbelievable feeling.”

“It’s a bit of a dream come true if I’m honest,” the defender, who signed for the club from Lucan United in 2012, told LFCTV.

“It was surreal. I got told Thursday that I was going to go up and train at Melwood and then on Friday I travelled with the team.”

“We had the team talk and I got told I was on the bench. I just couldn’t believe it. It was an unbelievable feeling. I was taken aback to be honest.”

Masterson also revealed the words of encouragement he received from his manager.

“Jurgen Klopp just said to me ‘if you get a chance to go on, then go out and enjoy yourself. There’s no pressure on you. Just go and do your best.'”

Masterson has captained the Republic of Ireland at U-17 level, and was last year named Irish U-16 player of the year.

Hopefully he can continue his progression at Liverpool and receive another call-up to the senior side.
