To non-cynical eyes, it appeared to be nothing more than a show of respect from one veteran manager to another but supporters could not quite believe that Ranieri, who went on to reveal that he would not be watching Monday night’s crucial clash between Chelsea and Spurs, was commending van Gaal on his season’s work.
