You can’t keep a good man down

Chris Hughton is back in the management game but he will not be pitting his wits against Premier League teams this season or, unless there is a miracle, next.

Brighton have confirmed the former Spurs and Ireland defender will take over the coaching duties from Sami Hyypia, who was sacked last week. The south coast club are perilously positioned above the Championship drop zone but defeated Fulham last time out.

Hughton’s most recent spell in the managerial hot-seat was with Norwich but he departed the club last season, months before their Premier League relegation. He enjoyed a successful term as Newcastle United boss and had been linked to a possible return after Alan Pardew was approached by Crystal Palace.

Hughton signs at three-and-a-half-year deal that should keep him occupied until June 2018 if everything goes his and Brighton’s way.
