Fernandes leapt to the defence of his teammate

Bruno Fernandes has defended Manchester United teammate Wout Weghorst after Richard Keys claimed it was like United were ‘playing with 10 men’ when he is on the pitch

Weghorst started United’s 3-0 win against the Foxes on Sunday but failed to find the back of the net and has only done so once since cutting his loan at Beşiktaş to join until the end of the season from Burnley.

Keys was very critical of the Dutchman’s performance and even went as far as to say that the forward was coasting through games.

“You’re playing with ten men most weeks if he’s [Weghorst] in,” he told beIN SPORTS.

“I mean, he doesn’t do enough to justify a starting place does he? Come on, let’s be honest!”

But Fernandes wasn’t having any of it and instead opted to praise his teammate and said that he is still contributing to the overall play.

“Sometimes it’s like this, you want the ball to go in and it’s a matter of time,” he told MUTV.

“As a striker, you always want to score goals but he’s doing his job, doing a lot of runs that we need, the pressure that we need.

“This is why he’s still playing. It’s a matter of time until he gets his goals. After he gets the first he will open something that will give him more and more goals so he can help the team even more.”

United are enjoying a rich vein of form and are third in the Premier League and only three points behind neighbours Manchester City.

Erik ten Hag’s impact in his first season has even led to some touting them as contenders to win the title.
